ROTOTO’s socks are made in Japan’s largest sock producing region, Nara Prefecture. The area has been known for its quality textile since around the 17th century. As textile weaving declined and people’s life style changed with time, sock production was gradually developed in the area as a new industry. With such a background, the local people in the region still call sock knitting as ‘sock weaving.’
ROTOTO places more value on manufacturing that requires a lot of discussion with factory craftsmen who preserve the tradition and history. To make an ideal pair of socks, exchanging opinions with skilled craftsmen is as important as using the right machine depending on a product.
ROTOTO’s socks can be made only with a combination of the right material, the right machine and craftsmanship. The aim is to preserve the tradition inherited from their ancestors, while painting the future of the major producer of socks with a fresh point of view. ROTOTO will keep trying to produce things that can be created only in this place.
Did you know that a fabric band wrapping a pair of ROTOTO socks is designed from fabric waste generated during the toe-knitting process? With the band, you can easily detect the size of a product because each size comes with a different color band. It serves also as a replacement of a plastic sock hanger for display.
【Product Description 】
Designed based on tube socks made in the U.S. in the late 1970s, these ribbed socks are knitted with a special knitting machine that is hard to find today, using low-count supple cotton yarn. The liner of the sole is brushed for a unique bouncy feel that only ROTOTO can create. The simple design fits any types of outfits from skater-like sporty styles to traditional ones.* The surface of the sock is quite sensitive to abrasion and can be worn out easily if you wear it with leather shoes. We recommend to turn it inside out and put in a laundry bag before laundry.
